Introduction
In recent years, professional organizations, government agencies, and health-care institutions have promoted the use of clinical practice guidelines as a vehicle for improving quality of care, reducing practice variations, and containing cost. Computer-based clinical decision support systems that provide assistance in clinical settings have been shown to be effective in improving quality of care. At the VA, the ATHENA Hypertension Guideline Decision Support System, using EON technology developed at Stanford Medical Informatics, Stanford University, has been deployed and evaluated at multiple medical centers. This website is intended to be an introduction to the ATHENA Decision Support research project including the workshops that were held with the intention of transferring technology knowledge between Stanford University and the VA.
