"Our...civilization engenders a multitude of wants. The hall and the theater and the church have been invented, and compulsory education. Why not add compulsory recreation?...Going to the mountains is going home...wilderness is a necessity and...mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life."
