Our publications fall into a few broad categories: administrative, general, and research publications. We also publish or use software. Our Directives are part of the Forest Service Manual and Forest Service Handbook.

Ecological Subregions of California

This document contains the biophysical descriptions of the sections and subsections as depicted on the map "Ecological Units of California." The text, which supplements the map by describing the delineated section and subsection ecological units, is the result of collaboration by contributors from federal agencies in California, State agencies, universities and individuals.

Forest Business Plans

The Forest Service Business Plan Initiative intends to improve the abilities of forests to communicate their financial condition and operational capabilities with principal stakeholders. These business plans provide forest managers with a powerful tool to communicate the current and future work of their organizations.

Forest Service Directives

The Forest Service Directive System consists of the Forest Service Manual and Handbooks, which codify the agency's policy, practice, and procedure. The system serves as the primary basis for the internal management and control of all programs and the primary source of administrative direction to Forest Service employees.

National Forests and California's Water

Although the National Forests cover only 20% of the land in California, they produce almost half the state's runoff water. Because so much of California's water comes from the National Forests, the health of our forest ecosystems and watersheds is critical.

Pacific Southwest NewsLog

The NewsLog is an employee newsletter published by the Public Affairs & Communication Staff to highlight events, projects, policies and other news throughout Region 5.

Pacific Southwest Region Histories

In celebration of the Forest Service Centennial in Region 5, three books were published in July 2005.

Water Quality Management for National Forest System Lands in California: Best Management Practices

The Pacific Southwest Region is the designated Water Quality Management Agency for National Forest System lands in California. The agency has developed and is implementing its Water Quality Management Plan, which is part of the State of California's Nonpoint Source Management Plan.
