On January 29, the U.S. Institute of Peace hosted a discussion exploring the current political and humanitarian crisis in Zimbabwe and possible avenues towards peace with Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Walter Kansteiner and Zimbabwean Ambassador to the United States Simbi Mubako. Moderated by Chester Crocker, Schlesinger Professor of Strategic Studies at Georgetown University and former Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, the briefing examined possible avenues toward peace and address such issues as:

  • U.S. foreign policy options toward Zimbabwe;
  • Southern African regional approaches to the crisis;
  • The possible consequences of a prolonged political deadlock in Zimbabwe; and
  • President Mugabe's strategy for exiting the current impasse.

Audio for this event was webcast live and included questions from the Internet audience.
