Fall, Winter, and Spring Sessions. Four-Week Session
Course Coordinator:
Jay Lozier, MD
Course Description
The Hematology Service of the Department of Laboratory Medicine is involved in clinical and investigational hematology. Responsibilities consist of consulting on hematologic problems arising in any patient in the Clinical Center and providing daily sessions for immediate "prereadings" of bone marrow slides important for therapeutic decisions. Students are expected to see patients under the direction of senior staff, to analyze significant problems, and to organize a diagnostic and therapeutic plan. Training in peripheral blood and bone marrow morphology is conducted throughout the elective period as the student's responsibilities and needs dictate. The routine and special hematology laboratories are under the direction of the Service. The Department of Transfusion Medicine is developing state-of-the-art methods for preparation of cell components for transplantation and transfusion to patients and provides full transfusion services including bedside consultations for patients in the Clinical Center. Students will also participate in outpatient services and tutorial seminars in areas of special interest and research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Clinical studies currently being conducted include:
- Blood morphology and histochemistry of peripheral blood and bone marrow.
- Platelet physiology and pathology and the detection and characterization of antiplatelet antibodies.
- Coagulation and fibrinolysis in normal and abnormal states (clinical and investigative).
- Transfusion therapy, with special emphasis on specific blood component preparation and replacement (stem cell, platelet, granulocyte, lymphocyte).
