Trial Description

Purpose:

Screening may help doctors find lung cancer sooner, when it may be easier to treat.

This clinical trial is studying screening methods to see how well they find lung cancer early in current or former smokers.

Eligibility:

Eligibility criteria include the following:

  • 50-75 years old
  • Currently smokes or stopped smoking no more than 14 years ago
  • More than 2 years since chest CT scan
  • For more information about the eligibility criteria for this trial, refer to the Health Professional version.

Final eligibility for a clinical trial is determined by the health professionals conducting the trial.

Treatment/Intervention:

Participants will have their lung function tested at the beginning of the study. They will also undergo a spiral CT scan at the beginning of the study and at 1 and 2 years. Some participants will undergo an additional CT scan at 3 months. Some participants will also undergo bronchoscopy and bronchial biopsies.

Participants will undergo blood sample collection periodically for laboratory studies at the beginning of the study and at least once a year for 2 years.

Participants will fill out questionnaires on smoking, work exposure, family history, medical information, quality of life, and anxiety at the beginning of the study and every 6 months for up to 2 years.
