Trial Description

Purpose:

Screening tests or exams may help doctors find lung cancer sooner, when it may be easier to treat.

This randomized clinical trial is studying screening tests or exams to see how well they work compared to usual care in finding early stage lung cancer in current or past smokers with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Eligibility:

Eligibility criteria include the following:

  • Smokes or smoked (quit smoking within the past 5 years) one pack of cigarettes a day for at least 20 years or two packs a day for at least 10 years
  • For more information about the eligibility criteria for this trial, refer to the Health Professional version.

Final eligibility for a clinical trial is determined by the health professionals conducting the trial.

Treatment/Intervention:

Patients will be randomly assigned (have an equal chance of being placed) to one of two groups.

Patients in group one will be evaluated for 5 years. After 5 years, some patients may undergo a chest x-ray.

Patients in group two will undergo screening for lung cancer for 5 years. Blood samples will be collected once a year. Sputum samples will also be collected. Patients with a normal sputum sample will undergo sputum sample collection once a year. Patients with an abnormal sputum sample will undergo a spiral CT scan once a year and bronchoscopy every 4-12 months. If invasive cancer is found, the patient will be referred to their personal doctor for treatment. Any remaining sputum samples will be stored for future laboratory studies.

Important:

For more details about this trial, refer to the Health Professional version of the trial summary.
