Abstract:

This newsletter discusses strategies of States and Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) to recruit and retain rural physicians. It describes successful strategies, including close, mutually beneficial cooperation between physicians and CAHs; CAH relationships with medical schools and residencies; physician income guarantees and other financial incentives; provision of backup relief coverage for workload; and assistance with family considerations to enhance satisfaction of rural physicians' families.
