Smyrna, Del. -- The second major Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) public assistance money for infrastructure repair has been released to the Delaware Emergency Management Agency to reimburse Sussex county government agencies for repairs needed after the severe June 23 storm and flooding.

"We are pleased that our partnership will help restore monies to the government agencies whose budgets were impacted by storm damage repairs. This is an important and traditional function of the FEMA and state partnership,"Glen R. Sachtleben, Federal Coordinating Officer, said.

"The short FEMA turn around in this process is helping our local agencies recover more quickly from the flooding of June 23. We appreciate the help,"Glenn Gillespie, State Coordinating Officer of the Delaware Emergency Management Agency, said.

Projects approved for funding to date total $370,703.

Other Sussex County applications are being processed, with reimbursements expected soon.

FEMA's Public Assistance Grant Program is one way federal assistance goes to the state, county and local governments to provide disaster grant assistance for emergency repair and labor, replacement, or restoration of disaster-damaged, publicly owned facilities and the facilities of certain private non-profit organizations. The federal share is not less than 75 percent of the eligible cost.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
