Alerts for New Articles in PILOTS

You can set up 'Alerts' to be notified by email of new articles that are added to the PILOTS database that are of interest to you. (What is PILOTS?)

NOTE: CSA has just updated their alerts interface which is now called "My Research". We will post information on how to use this new feature in the near future.

To set up a new Alert

  1. Decide on a topic for which you want to be alerted about new articles.
  2. From SEARCH PILOTS, run a search relevant to that topic.
    Search Strategy
    • We recommend you use Advanced Search
    • The default ‘Anywhere’ will get you the references with the term you search on in the descriptors, title, abstract, author or keywords, but you can be more specific.
    • We recommend you use the PILOTS Thesaurus to find the most relevant ‘DESCRIPTOR(s)’ (‘descriptors’ have been determined to be what the article is mainly about by someone who codes the articles).
    • To browse on terms you think are relevant, hit GO
    • From the list, select the most narrow term(s) to find specifically what you want
    • Narrow terms are found by clicking on words with (+) after them
    • If you choose ‘Treatment’ you will get articles that have treatment as a descriptor. NOTE: your search will not include all narrower terms unless you click on EXPLODE in the thesaurus
    • Some key ‘descriptors’ you might choose are ‘psychotherapy’, ‘drug therapy’, or ‘treatment’ but use EXPLODE as needed.
    • To get the terms you choose in the Thesaurus into your search,
      click green SEARCH box
  3. At the top right of the search results page click ‘Search
    History’.
  4. Click ‘Save as Alert’.
  5. If you are a new user to ‘Alerts’, then below green CONTINUE
button click ‘New User? Create a personal profile’ (otherwise enter your
email address and password, then click ‘Continue’).
  6. Again, click ‘Save as Alert’.

A saved ‘Alert’ will be used to automatically search your selected databases for new content every week. You will receive an email message that contains new records (up to 250) with content matching your search criteria.

How to edit your Alerts

  • Choose the format that you want your results emailed (Short, Full, Full--omit refs, or Custom format).
  • You may choose to delimit your citations by Journal Article only or English only.
  • To learn more, from the PILOTS database, click on ‘Help & Support’ then click on the ‘Index Tab’ and look up Alerts.
