HAZUS-MH MR2 FAQs: Basic HAZUS Usage

Can HAZUS be used for site-specific analyses?

HAZUS is best used as a regional loss model. However, HAZUS does allow the analysis on a single building or a portfolio of buildings. It is important to remember that HAZUS results are interpreted best in an aggregate form. On the other hand, the analysis on a portfolio of buildings also provides very useful information in identifying the most vulnerable buildings in that portfolio. Such information is critical when deciding on prioritizing buildings for seismic retrofitting, when performing cost-benefit studies, or even for resource allocation modeling. Related information for the earthquake hazard can be found in Chapter 3 of the Advanced Engineering Building Module Technical and User's Manual.

For additional information, the HAZUS User's Manual, as well as other HAZUS manuals and guidance materials are available for download from the HAZUS Resources.
