(Oct. 23, 2008) Thirty years after joining the International Organization for Standardization (known as the ISO), on October 17, 2008, the Standardization Administration of China (SAC) became the organization's sixth permanent member of the 18-member ISO Council, which governs operations of the international body (the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is one of the other five permanent members). The ISO, whose headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland, has 157 members, divided into three groups: member bodies (voting members, the largest group), correspondent members, and subscriber members. The permanent membership comes 12 years ahead of the SAC's objective set forth in its development plan, in the wake of a decision taken at the ISO's 31st General Assembly meeting, held in Dubai, to expand the number of permanent members.
