(Jul. 02, 2008) In June 2008, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, said that a deep understanding of the Islamic religion and law will lead to ending terrorism and that religious leaders are at the forefront of this endeavor. If they properly assume their duties, Maliki stated, they will be a support to the government in combating terrorism and "the outlaws."
