MOUNTAINAIR RANGER DISTRICT TO BEGIN TRAVEL MANAGEMENT
MOUNTAINAIR, NM – January 13, 2009 – The Cibola National Forest is hosting three community meetings as part of the public involvement process for addressing Travel Management on the Mountainair Ranger District. The USDA Forest Service issued the Travel Management Rule in November, 2005. The Rule provides a framework under which designation of roads, trails, and areas suitable for motorized use are made at the local level. When the designation process is completed, a Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) will be published showing the system of routes designated for motorized use. Motorized use will then be prohibited outside of the designated system.
Participation in these meetings will help Forest Service personnel understand how people use motor vehicles on the Mountainair Ranger District in addition to their concerns regarding motorized use. Meeting participants will also have the opportunity to identify high priority routes and areas and to share why these routes are valued. The end product of the Travel Management process will be the publication of a Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) showing a system of routes designated for motorized use. The use of motorized vehicles will not be allowed outside of the designated system after the MVUM is issued.
The community meetings are scheduled for the following dates/times and locations:
