Program Summary
The TCF Program's Utility Tech/Boiler Plant Operator internship consists of two years of specialized training to safely operate VA Boiler Plant equipment and associated controls. Interns are trained for a challenging career as utility plant instrument and control technicians possessing the skills required for the maintenance and management of utility systems, including associated safety devices that ensure fuel efficient plant operations at VA medical centers.

Training Objectives
The objectives of the program are to train qualified recent military veterans and individuals with instrument and controls specialty training or aptitude to meet the needs of VA medical centers in routine utility plant operations. Objectives are attained by providing:

  • Essential working knowledge of principles and practices required for the operation of Boiler Plants and related safety devices within VA medical centers
  • Guidance and resources for the development of knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to achieve professional growth and proficiency in safe utility operations
  • Support in seeking opportunities for placement in a permanent position upon completion of the program

Training Specifics
Through an environment that is conducive to learning, the Utility Tech/Boiler Plant Operator intern will:

  • Develop knowledge of VA's Mission, Vision, and Goals
  • Gain the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of Utility Technicians/Boiler Plant Operators in VA medical centers
  • Apply appropriate operational principles, testing and maintenance, properties of steam, properties of fuel gases and liquid fuels in the management of a Boiler Plant
  • Develop knowledge of the dangers associated with fuel storage, water chemistry, basic combustion and combustion safety, as well as OSHA and EPA rules
  • Be provided with "Safe Steam'in" training, VHA Boiler Safety Device Testing Manual, and Plant Operations for Efficiency manual
  • Develop the ability to work as a team member
  • Develop proficient written, oral communication, and listening skills

Qualifications:
The ability and willingness to relocate is a requirement for selection as a TCF Program intern. If relocation is necessary for permanent placement, VA pays for moving expenses. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
