The National Institutes of Health Extramural Research Program
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the principal biomedical health research agency of the Federal Government; it is a component of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). With headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland, the NIH is a large, complex organization composed of 28 distinct Institutes and Centers. In our mission to protect and improve human health, the NIH conducts and supports basic, applied, clinical, and behavioral research to understand the processes underlying human health and to acquire new knowledge to help prevent, diagnose, and treat human diseases and disabilities. Each Institute and Center within the NIH, participating in the Extramural Loan Repayment Program, has a mandate with well-defined priorities that address science and health from a specific perspective, a disease area (cancer) or an area of concern (aging) (Click here for a list of NIH Institute/Center contacts). To achieve these goals, the NIH spends 80-85 percent of its total budget in support of biomedical and behavioral research and research training by more than 50,000 scientists located at more than 1,700 universities, research institutions, and medical centers across the United States and abroad.
About 11 percent of the NIH's total budget supports intramural research conducted by federally employed scientists within its laboratories on or near the NIH campus and in our research hospital (Click here for more information on the Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center), which comprises nearly half of the clinical research beds in use in the United States.
