US Federal GILS
Abstract:
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) part of the federal
Government Information Locator Service (GILS) describes over 200 of EPA's major
publicly-available information resources. These information resources vary
widely in type -- including resources such as libraries, clearinghouses,
computer systems, dockets, hotlines, and directories.
EPA's GILS descriptions are made available to searchers via the World Wide Web
and Z39.50 protocols. The Web interface to EPA's GILS provides more than just
search capability. It also includes browse capabilities, a user feedback form,
reference information, and the ability for users to request additional
assistance in finding EPA information. The provision of additional human
assistance, via electronic mail, is an important part of EPA's GILS service.
Though GILS usage accounts for only a small portion of the total visitors to
EPA's popular website, GILS provides an ordered and well-structured starting
point to gain an overview of EPA public information resources. In as many
cases as possible, the GILS descriptive record provides a hotlink enabling
direct electronic access to the information resource itself. In other cases,
the EPA GILS description provides the pointer information necessary for the
reader to subsequently gain access to the information resource.
Purpose:
Improve access to EPA's public information resources. Provide a comprehensive
set of high-quality current descriptions of EPA's public information assets.
Comply with the requirement for EPA to contribute its share to the collective
US Federal GILS.
Agency Program:
Fulfill legislative mandates for responsible stewardship of EPA's information
resources, including varied environmental statutes, the Paperwork Reduction
Act, the Computer Matching and Privacy Protection Act, the Computer Security
Act, and the Information Technology Management Reform Act, among others.
Comply with executive branch directions such as OMB Bulletin 95-01, OMB
Circular A-130, and Federal Information Processing Standard 192.
