The Executive for Systems Development and Maintenance Services (SDMS) is responsible for the full life cycle management of the USPTO's major Automated Information Systems (AISs), consistent with the USPTO's strategic IT plans and supporting technical architecture. The Divisions that report to the Executive for SDMS develop, test, deploy and maintain application software for USPTO employee and customer use.

Four senior managers, a senior level technical advisor, and senior advisors for Electronic Government (E-Government) and Extensible Markup Language (XML) technologies support the Executive in the development and maintenance of information systems. The office consists of four divisions: Public Search Systems, Patent Re-engineering Systems, Trademark & E-Gov Business Systems, and Corporate Systems.
