New Wild and Scenic River Resource Protection Regulations!

The Flathead National Forest is instituting resource protection regulations during the summer of 2008 on the North Fork and Middle Fork of the Flathead River. Unfortunately, human waste, fire scars and garbage have been accumulating within the designated Wild and Scenic Flathead River Corridor. Not only is this waste unsightly, but it is a sanitation issue at campsites and along the river.

Imagine this setting, getting off the river just as the sun is setting, pitching your tent as it gets dark, waking up to a wonderful sunrise and stepping out of your tent the next morning to find an unmentionable pile just a foot away. Well, amazingly enough this is more and more the case. The River Managers from the Flathead National Forest and Glacier National Park began seriously discussing the possibility of requiring self-containment after the public called complaining about human waste at several dispersed sites along the North Fork of the Flathead River. We know the additional regulations may cause users to re-arrange their trips, camp at different locations with public toilet facilities, or purchase self contained toilet systems or approved bags. We hope you understand the new rules are about clean water, healthy fisheries, and a wild and scenic place to camp along the river.
