Rural Health Policy - DIRECTORY OF STATE OFFICES OF RURAL HEALTH

Federally funded since 1991, the purpose of SORH is to assist States in strengthening rural health care delivery systems by maintaining a focal point for rural health within each State. SORH provides funding for an institutional framework that links small rural communities with State and Federal resources to help develop long term solutions to rural health problems.

SORH is authorized by Section 338J of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. 254r) and is a Federal-State partnership, requiring a State funding match of $3 for each $1 of Federal funding. SORH funds a State Office of Rural Health grantee in each of the 50 States. Currently, 36 of the grantees are located in State health departments, 11 in academic settings (ten universities and one junior college) and three are non-profit organizations. State Offices of Rural Health conduct the following activities:
