Nursing Research Initiative

The Nursing Research Initiative (NRI), initiated by the Undersecretary for Health, represents a commitment by VHA to increase research career opportunities for nurses. It is intended that the NRI will encourage the development of nurse investigators to conduct independent research focused on high priority, VA mission-oriented areas of investigation. Topic areas of interest described in this solicitation were determined by the Office of Research and Development, with input from the Office of Nursing Services.

Applicants must have nursing degrees and be active VA employees (minimum of 5/8th positions). These nurses are expected to work with experienced investigators who have expertise in the proposed field of research and explicit knowledge of VA policies and procedures.

NRI is a ORD-wide program and therefore may be developed with a clinical, rehabilitation, health services or biomedical laboratory focus. Health Services Research & Development Service (HSR&D) administers the ORD program and review sessions. However, approved projects are funded according to the targeted Service funding guidelines.
