2001 HSR&D National Meeting

"VA Health Services Research: Improving Access and Outcomes" was the theme of this year's Health Services Research & Development Service (HSR&D) 19th National Meeting held in Washington, DC on February 14-16, 2001. Led by HSR&D Director John G. Demakis, MD, approximately 500 researchers, clinicians and policy makers participated in an array of activities including paper sessions, exhibits, workshops and a poster session - all focusing on improving access to care and outcomes for veteran patients. Current health services research showcased at the meeting included: access problems among VA and county clinic patients with diabetes, delivery of primary care to patients with serious mental illness, access to care and special populations, clinical practice guidelines and outcomes, and cost and resource utilization. One of the meeting highlights was an address by Secretary for Veterans Affairs, the Honorable Anthony J. Principi, who praised HSR&D's efforts to assess new technologies and explore cost effective strategies for improving health outcomes. Secretary Principi also stressed VA's commitment to providing "veterans with the access to care they have earned through their service and sacrifice."
