Mission

The Unit works to understand the biochemistry, biology, and pathology of cell surface-associated serine proteases and their inhibitors.  Emphasis is given to determining the contribution of these enzymes to the development, regeneration, and malignant transformation of oral tissues.

Our Unit currently has three areas of investigation: 

• Type II transmembrane serine proteases in epithelial development, repair, and malignancy 
  
  
• The urokinase plasminogen activator receptor-associated protein (uPARAP) in intracellular collagen degradation
  
  
• Reengineered bacterial cytotoxins as antitumor and protease imaging agents
