Contact: Dr. Jane Atkinson, (301) 435-7908, jatkinso@mail.nih.gov

The Epidemiology Research Program supports research aimed at:

  1. describing the distribution of oral, dental and craniofacial diseases and disorders
  2. identifying risk factors and markers for the progression of these diseases
  3. understanding risks and protective factors for these diseases and disorders
  4. understanding how genetic, behavioral and environmental factors interact to contribute to disease susceptibility
  5. identifying oral health disparities among population sub-groups

Types of NIDCR-Supported Research

The Epidemiology Research Program supports population-based cross-sectional descriptive, case-control and prospective cohort studies. Examples of research areas of interest to the NIDCR are :

  • Representative surveys of various racial, socioeconomic and demographic subpopulations including the elderly, the physically and mentally disabled, and those individuals at risk for health disparities
  • Observational studies to clarify the potential association of oral and systemic diseases
  • Longitudinal observational studies on the sequelae and impact of oral and craniofacial diseases and conditions
  • Determination of early childhood caries using d1 and d2 criteria
  • Epidemiological investigations of primary and secondary caries
  • State-based epidemiological assessments of specific oral diseases or disorders
  • Identification and validation of existing and new methods to measure and document oral, dental and craniofacial diseases and conditions
