NIDCR Funds Seven New Grants in Saliva/Oral Fluid Based Diagnostics

Seven Cooperative Agreements (UO1s) received in response to the RFA on "Development of Technologies for Saliva/Oral Fluid Based Diagnostics" were recently funded by the NIDCR. In addition, NIDCR hosted a meeting of these grantees at NIH.

NIH Provides AREA (R15) Grants For Institutions That Are Not Major Recipients of NIH Support

The NIH is continuing to make a special effort to stimulate research in educational institutions that provide baccalaureate training for a significant number of the nation's research scientists but that have not been major recipients of NIH support. See more information about AREA (R15) grants

NIDCR Convenes Special Expert Panels

NIDCR has convened panels of experts to help identify and catalogue areas of scientific opportunity for the period 2004-2009 within three major topics: Genomics and Proteomics of Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Diseases (May 22); Repair and Regeneration of Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Tissues (September 5); and Clinical Approaches to Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention of Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Diseases (November 14). In addition, expert panels on Training (June 7) and on Long-Term Opportunities in AIDS Research (December 10) have met.  See the reports of the special expert panels on long- range research opportunities

NIDCR Requests Input on Development of Proposed Initiatives for FY 2005

NIDCR has started the process of developing its FY 2005 scientific initiatives and is seeking input and advice from the extramural community and the public.

First Meeting on Dentistry's Role in Responding to Bioterrorism

The first national conference on dentistry's role in responding to bioterrorism and other catastrophic events will be held in Washington, D.C., March 27-28, 2003. The U.S. Public Health Service and the American Dental Association are cosponsoring the conference. The NIDCR and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are providing support.

Centralization of NIDCR Training and Career Development Activities

Activities for training, career development, dental school infrastructure, and outreach and recruitment are being centralized to the Office of the Director, NIDCR. With this move, Dr. Sharon Gordon, currently Director of the Office of Education, Division of Intramural Research, will assume responsibility for all research training and career development activities at the NIDCR; Dr. James Lipton will direct dental school research infrastructure and curriculum development activities, and Ms. Lorrayne Jackson will lead extramural recruitment and outreach activities.

New Focus for NIDCR's Clinical Trials Program

NIDCR introduced its revised clinical trials program in December 2002. The program now focuses on the conduct of definitive, multicenter Phase III clinical trials that provide scientific evidence for consideration of a change in health policy or standard of care.

Research Resources Now Available on NIDCR Web Site

NIDCR has added a new section to its web site on "Research Resources." 

Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Data Now Available on Internet

The Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Data Resource Center (DRC), co-sponsored by the NIDCR and the Division of Oral Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), launched its new web site at http://drc.nidcr.nih.gov. The web site features: 1) Oral Health U.S., 2002, an annual report of oral health statistics summarizing the oral health status of the U.S. population; 2) a statistical system, which is an on-line interactive data analysis tool making NHANES III oral health data readily available; and 3) a Catalog of Surveys and Archive of Procedures Related to Oral Health, a searchable database containing information on over 250 surveys and data sets.

National Oral Health Information Clearinghouse (NOHIC)-- A Resource for Health Professionals and Patients

NOHIC, a service of the NIDCR, is a resource for health professionals and special care patients--patients with medical or disabling conditions that compromise oral health. NOHIC produces and distributes patient and professional education materials, sponsors the Oral Health Database, and provides free custom or standard searches on specific special care topics in oral health.

Personnel News

On February 1, Dr. Robert Selwitz will become Chief of the Health Policy, Analysis and Development Branch, Division of Population and Health Promotion Sciences (DPHPS).
