NIDCR Oral Microbe Microarray Initiative (NOMMI)

OVERVIEW

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Diseases (NIDCR) is pleased to announce the continuation of an initiative to provide no-cost, oligonucleotide genomic DNA microarray slides ("chips") for oral bacteria. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the NIDCR and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Pathogen Functional Genomics Resource Center (PFGRC This external link provides additional information that is consistent with the intended purpose of the NIDCR site.) located at the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI This external link provides additional information that is consistent with the intended purpose of the NIDCR site.). The NIAID PFGRC is a centralized facility to produce and distribute high quality oligonucleotide glass microarrays to the scientific community. The PFGRC serves as an important resource to infectious diseases researchers wishing to investigate the genomics of human pathogens and invertebrate vectors of diseases, including now oral pathogens.

Currently, requests for the following oral bacteria genomic microarrays are now being accepted:

  • Porphyromonas gingivalis strain W83 This external link provides additional information that is consistent with the intended purpose of the NIDCR site.
  • Streptococcus mutans strain UA159 This external link provides additional information that is consistent with the intended purpose of the NIDCR site.
  • Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans strain HK1651 This external link provides additional information that is consistent with the intended purpose of the NIDCR site.
  • Treponema denticola strain ATCC 35405 This external link provides additional information that is consistent with the intended purpose of the NIDCR site.
  • Fusobacterium nucleatum strain ATCC 10953 This external link provides additional information that is consistent with the intended purpose of the NIDCR site.
  • Streptococcus sanguinis strain SK36 This external link provides additional information that is consistent with the intended purpose of the NIDCR site.

NOTE: Microarrays for other medically related microorganisms may be available from the PFGRC.

Investigators at both research intense and non-intense institutions as well as foreign and domestic laboratories may request the microarrays. Investigators need not be NIDCR grant recipients, although high priority will be given to those who currently have an NIDCR grant studying the oral pathogen. Microarrays can be requested for both exploratory/developmental as well as established research projects. The PFGRC will provide up to 150 glass microarrays per organism per request. Microarrays and any related reagents are provided to the research community for research purposes only. Their use for commercial purposes is prohibited.

Investigators interested in receiving these slides must complete a short application explaining how they will use the slides and their expertise in microbial genomics.

Upcoming receipt dates for NOMMI applications:

    • We now accept applications on a rolling basis (no specific submission deadline)(Please note that these dates may be different from the receipt dates for other PFGRC microarray applications and that these applications may have specific receipt dates)
