What Do You Do During a Tornado Warning at the FLETC/Glynco?

The FLETC/Glynco Early Warning System (EWS) sounds a fast wail siren indicating a Tornado Warning for the immediate area. When seeking shelter during a Tornado Warning, if at all possible, take shelter inside a more strongly constructed building. Buildings on the FLETC/Glynco that fall into this category include (but are not limited to):

  • Buildings 63-70, Interior Hallways

  • Buildings 93, Interior Hallways

  • Building 166 (MAC Building), Interior Hallways

  • Building 216, Interior Hallways or Classrooms

  • Building 221 (Indoor Firearms Range), Interior Hallways or Indoor Ranges

  • Buildings 261-263 (Steed Building Complex), Interior Hallways

  • Building 680, Interior Hallways

  • Indoor-Outdoor Firearms Ranges, against the walls

If you are not in or near any of these buildings, get into an interior hallway or sheltered space, preferably in a corner. Avoid rooms with glass or windows. The first floor is better than the second, as it is more sheltered. For additional shelter, get under a sturdy piece furniture (if available) such as a workbench or heavy table or desk and hold on to it. Use your arms to protect your head and neck.

Places to avoid during a tornado:

  • Open flat areas, especially standing up in an open field

  • Cars, especially smaller lightweight vehicles

  • Weak structures like trailers and mobile homes

If you are located in a trailer or other less strongly constructed structure when you hear the EWS sound a Tornado Warning, you should vacate the trailer/structure immediately and relocate to a more sound structure for the duration of the threat period.

Training Divisions and Partner Organizations should ensure that instructors who provide instruction to students in locations where the students might need to relocate from during a Tornado Warning (e.g., outdoor activities, trailer classrooms, etc.) are aware of what to do and where to go in such an event. If you have no options to take shelter in a nearby building and if you are caught out in an unsheltered area, lie in a ditch or low-lying area. After the threat period is over, an “ALL CLEAR” signal will be activated over the EWS to advise personnel that the weather threat period has ended.
