What can I find in this database?

This database strives to compile all non-human primate vaccine trials involving human, simian of HIV/SIV hybrid immunodeficiency viruses (HIVs, SIVs or SHIVs). Human trials are covered by the IAVI database http://www.iavireport.org/trialsdb/ at the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative.

Who are you?

The database staff includes molecular biologists, sequence analysts, computer technicians, post-docs, and graduate research assistants. We are part of the Theoretical Biology and Biophysics Group (T-10) at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. We are funded by the Division of AIDS of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases through an interagency agreement with the Department of Energy.

Why are there several separate databases here?

Our databases are organized around several areas of HIV research. The HIV Vaccine Trial Database has 3 companion databases:

How are studies entered into this database?

We use a set of criteria to search PubMed for relevant studies to enter into the database. In selecting studies for entry, priority is given to recently published studies in journals generally regarded as the primary source of information pertaining to HIV and SIV vaccine research in nonhuman primates. In most cases, we give priority to challenge studies, where the animals received a live virus to measure the efficacy of the immunogen(s) inoculated during the course of the investigation.

If you have very specific search criteria, use the Search Form. For example, if you are searching only for studies of HIV-1 in macaques, or if you only want studies that include a specific author, use the Search Form. On the other hand, if you want to see a broader overview of all the studies in the database, use the Cross- Table Form, and choose the two criteria most important to you. The cross-table form provides a unique way to explore trial data by presenting counts and results (number of case animals protected from infection and total number of case animals) by the relationship of 2 selected fields.

What does "Current database" and "Previous database" mean?

Through 1999, Dr. Jon Warren, at the Emmes Corporation, maintained a database of preclinical nonhuman primate SIV/HIV vaccine trials. This data is organized differently compared to the Los Alamos (the Current Database), and with different data fields and somewhat different nomenclature. The trials in the Emmes (a.k.a. the Previous Database) database span the years 1987 through 1999 and were the basis for Dr. Warren's survey published biennially in The Journal of Medical Primatology. The latest survey, August 2002, is PubMed# 12390546

By default, searches are performed against the Current Database. In the search results you will see a button near the top of the page called "View Trials in Previous Database". Click that button to apply the search criteria to the Emmes database. Note that due to differences in data structure and parsing of information, not all criteria on the search form can be applied to the previous database. The software applies what it can apply and informs you of criteria that could not be applied.

What is in the Adjuvant/Stimulant Database?

This database consists of a list of traditional adjuvants or stimulants, which are substances used to enhance immune responses to vaccines. A list of all substances in the adjuvant database can be viewed by searching with a blank search field.

This database is based on the Adjuvant Compendium kindly provided by Dr. Carl Alving and his collaborators at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Washington DC.
