About NHSC

America's Health Care Hereos

Why We Are Here

America Needs Health Care Heroes.

The facts about the state of primary health care in underserved communities across the United States speak for themselves:

  • 50 million Americans live in underserved communities, lacking adequate access to primary care service - areas known as health professional shortage areas (HPSAs).
  • 27,000 primary care professionals are needed to adequately serve the people living in HPSAs
  • Currently, over 4,000 active NHSC clinicians are caring for nearly 4 million people
  • This leaves some 50 million people still left without adequate health care in their communities
  • Currently, the NHSC has over 4,000 open positions available at its member clinics around the country.
  • Through our Scholarship and Loan Repayment program placements, approximately 1,200 of these positions will be filled in 2007.

After our program awards are distributed, the NHSC is still left with 2,800 vacancies to fill and over 4 million patients waiting for health care professionals.

That's why the NHSC is striving to find health professionals with an extraordinary desire to make a difference and help them launch satisfying careers in serving the underserved.
