| Source data and documentation for recent years are available at the NCES World Wide Web site: http://nces.ed.gov. |
Availability |
| Data are available for academic years (AY) 1966 through 1998, and 2000 through 2006; NCES did not release data for AY 1999. From AY 1966 through AY 1986, these data were derived from the annual Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS). Beginning in 1987, these data were derived from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). AY 2006 is defined as July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006. |
Current As Of |
| Data are current as of February 2008. |
Data Limitations |
| Changes in the questionnaires occurred between academic year (AY) 1970-71, and
AY 82-83; these changes had the greatest impact on the associate
degrees and certificates. Therefore, the data for degrees requiring less
than four years work from HEGIS I, 1966, through HEGIS V, 1970, are
incompatible with the data from subsequent years. This is true only of the
associate degrees and certificates--other values are comparable for all
years. |
Alerts |
| The Exercise Sciences/Physiology and Movement Studies CIP code (31.0505)
that was mapped previously to the WebCASPAR discipline, Health Technologies,
is now mapped to Other Life Sciences. |
| The report, "Science and Engineering Degrees," published by the National Science Foundation (NSF) excludes degrees in the medical sciences, the other life sciences, and all the Science and Engineering (S&E) technologies from the S&E total. |
| For years prior to 1996, the NCES and NSF populations of institutions are the same.
Beginning with 1996 data, the NCES has changed the subset of the postsecondary institutional universe for which data are generally reported. Previous reports were concerned primarily with enrollment in postsecondary institutions that were accredited at the college level by an agency recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education (ED). Current NCES publications subset the postsecondary institutional universe on the basis of the degree-granting status (information that is available directly from IPEDS) as well as eligibility for Title IV federal financial aid (based on a list of eligible institutions maintained by ED's Office of Postsecondary Education).
Please pay close attention to the subset of the postsecondary institutional universe for which NCES data are reported when comparing NCES data to WebCASPAR data. |
Notes |
| First-Professional Degrees are degrees that require at least six years work
beyond high school, and signify completion of the academic
requirements to begin practicing a profession. The NCES recognizes ten
First-Professional Degrees: D.C., Chiropractic; D.D.S, Dentistry; M.D.,
Medicine; O.D., Optometry; D.O., Osteopathic Medicine; D.Phar., Pharmacy;
Pod.D., Podiatry; D.V.M., Veterinary Medicine; LL.B., Law; and M.Div.,
Theology. |
Quality Control |
| These data have been checked and verified to correspond to data in the
following NCES publication: |
|
Postsecondary Institutions in the United States: Fall 2006 and Degrees and Other Awards Conferred: 2005-06 |
| Data in NCES publications are for the 50 United States plus the District of Columbia and will not match CASPAR data for the 50 United States plus the District of Columbia, because NCES data reflect the state of the reporting unit, while CASPAR data reflect the state of the main unit. In CASPAR, multiple reporting units are combined under the FICE code of the main unit and reporting units may be located in different states (or territories) than that of the main unit. NCES data for the 50 United States plus the District of Columbia may be more closely approximated in CASPAR by including "Unknown State" with the 50 United States plus the District of Columbia. |
| In addition, data for Baccalaureate and Master's degrees have been checked
and verified to correspond to data in the National Science
Foundation publication series, Science and Engineering Degrees. |
