| Availability |
| Data are available for academic years (AY) 1977, 1979, 1981, 1985, 1987, 1989 through 1998, and 2000 through 2006; NCES did not release data for AY 1999. AY 2005 is defined as July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006. |
| The race and ethnicity data for AY 1983 (HEGIS XVIII) were not edited by NCES. Therefore, the data were deemed unusable and not loaded into CASPAR. |

| Data Limitations |
| These data are not broken down by the same detailed disciplines
used in the regular earned degrees data. The set of broad disciplines by
which these data are available is based on the regular academic
disciplines. However, there are several important differences that prevent
direct comparisons between the race and ethnicity data and the regular
earned degrees data. Users should be sure to understand these
differences. For example, agricultural sciences normally exclude
agribusiness and agricultural production. However, race/ethnicity
include agribusiness and agricultural production. The physical
sciences include both physical AND environmental sciences. |
| These data were not collected by detailed, six-digit CIP codes prior to academic year 1995. Instead, they were
collected by broad, two-digit CIP codes with the exception for a few disciplines (i.e., Law, Medicine, Theology) that were collected by six-digit CIP codes. |
| Alerts |
| In academic year 1985, five institutions in Puerto Rico reported all students as
race unknown. The data for these five institutions (FICE codes 3937, 3943,
3944, 7108, and 29316) have been moved from unknown to Hispanic. |
| For years prior to 1996, the NCES and NSF populations of institutions are the same.
Beginning with 1996 data, the NCES has changed the subset of the postsecondary institutional universe for which data are generally reported. Previous reports were concerned primarily with enrollment in postsecondary institutions that were accredited at the college level by an agency recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education (ED). Current NCES publications subset the postsecondary institutional universe on the basis of the degree-granting status (information that is available directly from IPEDS) as well as eligibility for Title IV federal financial aid (based on a list of eligible institutions maintained by ED's Office of Postsecondary Education).
Please pay close attention to the subset of the postsecondary institutional universe for which NCES data are reported when comparing NCES data to WebCASPAR data. |

| Data in NCES publications are for the 50 United States plus the District of Columbia and will not match CASPAR data for the 50 United States plus the District of Columbia, because NCES data reflect the state of the reporting unit, while CASPAR data reflect the state of the main unit. In CASPAR, multiple reporting units are combined under the FICE code of the main unit and reporting units may be located in different states (or territories) than that of the main unit. NCES data for the 50 United States plus the District of Columbia may be more closely approximated in CASPAR by including "Unknown State" with the 50 United States plus the District of Columbia. |
