Sheila A. Newton, MS, PhDDr. Newton is the Director of the Office of Policy, Planning, and Evaluation for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). She received her MS and PhD in biochemistry from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Dr. Newton also worked from 1994–96 in the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion in what is now the Office of Public Health and Science, Department of Health and Human Services. She was the Senior Advisor for Environmental and Occupational Health for the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health; Executive Secretary for the Environmental Health Policy Committee (EHPC), a policy-level group comprising the senior leadership of Public Health Service agencies with environmental health-related missions (including NIEHS); Senior Advisor for the EHPC Subcommittee on Environmental Justice; and Executive Secretary for the Committee on Health, Safety, and Food, a committee chaired by Assistant Secretary for Health Philip R. Lee under the National Science and Technology Council. From 1982–92 she was a Research Associate and later Assistant Professor at the Howard University Cancer Center, Department of Oncology, Howard University College of Medicine.
