Studies show substance abuse continues to be one of the most
chronic health problems faced by American Indians and Alaska
Natives.
HRSA is one of three organizations that collaborated on a
new publication that helps health care professionals more
effectively prevent and treat substance abuse among American
Indian and Alaska Native individuals.
Titled Health Promotion and Substance Abuse Prevention
Among American Indian and Alaska Native Communities: Issues
in Cultural Competence, the document focuses on how to
design health care solutions that reflect the culture and
beliefs of the two communities. It also looks at:
- best prevention practices;
- combining holistic and modern approaches to drug abuse
treatment; and
- community service models that help meet demographic and
cultural needs.
The document is a product of a partnership between HRSA's
Bureau of Primary Health Care and two other Department of
Health and Human Services entities, the Substance Abuse and
Mental Health Services Administration and the Office of Minority
Health.
