Amethyst Technologies, LLC - Kimberly Brown, Ph.D.

Amethyst Technologies, LLC. (ATL) is one of the numerous contractors that provide services to the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (MRMC). It is an extremely reputable, eminently qualified Woman-Owned, Minority Small Business firm that provides innovative and relevant business solutions in support of the USAMRMC mission and vision. The company is headed and owned by Kimberly Brown, Ph.D., CEO/President.

The MRMC Headquarters at Fort Detrick, Maryland, supports twelve major subordinate commands located throughout the world. Included are six medical research laboratory commands and five subordinate commands which perform intramural research to develop medical solutions for the battlefield. Major research areas include infectious diseases, combat casualty care, operational medicine, and chemical/biological defense. Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) is one of MRMC’s major customers.

Dr. Brown’s initial work began at WRAIR as a Doctoral Intern with Cell Systems, Inc in 1992. She is noted for creating custom software that tracked all regulated equipment at the WRAIR Pilot Bioproduction Facility. The software is still in use today. Dr Brown went on to become the Validation Manager for WRAIR as a Cell Systems, Inc employee in 2002. In February 2007, she purchased Cell Systems and renamed it Amethyst Technologies, LLC.

ATL is considered an industry leader, market-focused biotechnology and FDA regulations compliance service provider for the public and private sectors, including the Department of Defense. The company provides WRAIR with support for critical areas such as validation, calibration, standard operating procedure development, commissioning, and development of custom software. These services enable the MRMC to remain the world's experts and leaders in delivering the best medical solutions to enhance, protect, treat and heal our Warfighters.

In February 2007, ATL assumed a contract (subcontractor to Prime contractor) to provide Validation, Calibration, Standard Operating Procedure Development, and Commissioning services to the WRAIR Pilot Bioproduction Facility. In June 2007, ATL received a Strategic Assistance Consulting Fund (SACF) grant funded by The Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) to develop the human resources program. Shortly afterwards in November 2007, ATL received a FY08 defense earmark of $800,000.00 to provide current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) services to USAMRMC.

One month later in December, ATL moved into the UMBC Techcenter as an incubator company. Adding to the company’s stellar accomplishments, in January 2008, Kimberly Brown graduated from the year long University of Maryland Baltimore County’s (UMBC) ACTIVATE Program, which focused on increasing the number of women-owned technology companies in Maryland.

Most recently, in May 2008, ATL was named as a finalist in the MD Incubator of the Year Awards in the Best Technical Services Company category. Also during the May 2008 timeframe, ATL was awarded a contract to develop custom software to trend environmental and water system data for FDA-regulated activities at the WRAIR PBF. ATL has added new clients in 2007-2008 including the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), Next Breath, WRAIR Medical Maintenance, WRAIR Viral Diseases, and KamTek Repository.

Dr. Kimberly Brown and her company through her due diligence have worked closely with the MRMC Office of Small Business Programs and the Fort Detrick Business Development Office throughout the past twelve months. Her steadfast efforts and those of her staff have resulted in ATL's establishing mutually beneficial strategic business relationships between ATL and MRMC.
