National Kidney Foundation of Arkansas Presents Renal Research Awards to VA Researchers

Muhammad G. Alam, MD, MPH, of the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has received one of two J. D. Chastain Renal Research Awards for 2001 from the National Kidney Foundation of Arkansas. Dr. Alam is receiving the award for his work on citrate anticoagulation for sustained low-efficiency dialysis. His fields of interest include hypertension epidemiology, dialysis in critically ill patients and preventive nephrology.

Amy M. Franks, PharmD, a Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy Fellow in the College of Pharmacy at UAMS and CAVHS will also receive a Chastain Award. Dr. Frank’s research interests include studies of the safety and efficacy of Candesartan in children, and studies of potential drug interactions and adverse reactions attributable to herbal supplements and herbal products.
