Secondhand smoke linked to diabetes

April 7, 2006

A study led by Drs. Thomas Houston and Catarina Kiefe at the Birmingham VA Medical Center and the University of Alabama showed, for the first time, that breathing other's people's smoke raises the risk of developing glucose intolerance, the precursor to diabetes. The researchers examined data from a 15-year study of nearly 5,000 people and found a higher risk for the condition not only among smokers, but among those with passive exposure to tobacco smoke.
