A listing of web sites that provide links to resources relating to the British Virgin Islands. The most important source for bibliography of books and articles concerning the British Virgin Islands is the annual Handbook of Latin American Studies (http://lcweb2.loc.gov/hlas/) produced by over 130 contributing editors under the editorship of the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress. Additional coverage of journal articles can be found through a subscription to the Hispanic American Periodical Index (http://hapi.gseis.ucla.edu/).   Both the Handbook and HAPI are available in selected libraries in book form.

Overview of the historical development of the British Virgin Islands. The British Virgin Islands consist of over thirty islands, islets, cays, and jagged rocks, sixteen of which are inhabited, with a total area of 59 square miles and a total population of about 19,000. The largest islands are Tortola (Turtle Dove), Virgin Gorda (Fat Virgin) and Aneegada (Drowned Land).

Features a historical overview of the defense of the British government colonies in the West Indies. The British Government was forced to defend it's colonies in the West Indies from their foundation from other European Powers. In the late 1700's Britain invested some of its overseas investment to the development of it's colonies in the area. In the late 18th century the British government calculated that a garrison of 20,000 soldiers was needed to defend it's Caribbean possessions. This raised a problem for in 1793 the entire British army totaled fewer than 40,000 men.

As part of World Statesmen, Ben M. Cahoon presents information about the heads of state and rulers of the British Virgin Islands, a British dependent territory, since the 1700s.
