Media and Communications: Iraq

Iraq's high literacy rate is responsible for the country's wide variety of print and broadcast news. Although Baghdad is considered one of the region's largest media centers, areas outside the capital which lack strong economic support, are not as well developed. Most daily broadcast programs are in Arabic with a few in English and French.

During Sadam's regime, all media had strong political and religious affiliations with the government. Muhammad Said al-Sabhaf, former Minister of Information, directed the media during the first stage of the war. The public commentary was eagerly followed by Iraqis and throughout the neighboring Arab countries.

The collapse of the Iraqi regime changed the country's public image. The media started to focus on Iraq's economic, political, military and strategic sectors. In response to the American influence, broadcasts began emphasizing the liberation of Iraq and its neighbors from the former oppressive regime.
