Summary
This position reports to the Fire Protection Team Leader of the Engineering Services Division's Design
Engineering (DE) Group. Engineering Services Division is part of LANL's Engineering and Engineering
Sciences Director. The DE group provides institutional leadership, processes, and technical resources for
safe, high quality, and cost-effective engineering and design in support of LANL operations. This
position is for an advanced-level fire suppression designer responsible for field investigations and
walk downs, data gathering, verification of existing drawings, updating and revising as-built and priority
drawings, AutoCAD drafting support for new projects/facility modifications, database maintenance,
small project design, and configuration management. The selected individual will be required to perform
these tasks in accordance with the LANL Engineering Standards Manual and other LANL policies and
procedures. Assignments are wide in scope, requiring a broad background of fire suppression design
experience and capability in all discipline areas, but limited in technical depth. The position requires
technical leadership and teamwork with multi-discipline design engineers and designersICADD
operators.
Required Skills
Significant experience performing fire suppression design and drafting.
Demonstrated proficiency in AutoCAD release 2002 or higher. Demonstrated knowledge and experience
producing drawings for fire suppression systems including isometric piping diagrams. Demonstrated
ability to perform suppression system layout and preliminary hydraulic calculations. Demonstrated
ability to perform basic water supply evaluations to determine potential design impacts. Field experience
identifying various systems and components, sizing and routing of piping, and documenting
configuration of existing systems. Demonstrated ability to work in an engineering team environment,
including the ability to work effectively within security, environmental, safety, and health requirements.
Demonstrated experience working efficiently in a multi-task environment with rapidly changing
priorities, working independently with minimal supervision. Effective written and oral communication
skills. Demonstrated customer focus. Applicant must have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which
usually requires US citizenship.
Desired Skills
Thorough knowledge of LANL drafting practices and CADD file management system.
Experience developing multi-discipline design documents. Experience with DOE, LANL, or nuclear
industry facility operations and maintenance requirements and best practices.' Experience interfacing
with clients, building managers, systems engineers, crafts, A/E firms, and vendors
Education
Associate's Degree in mechanical design computer aided design drafting or equivalent education and experience. NICET III fire suppression certification.
