Summary

STRUCTURAL ENGINEER - This position reports to the Civil/Structural/Architectural (CSA) Team Leader of the Engineering Services Division, Design Engineering (DE) Group. ES division is part of LANL's Engineering and Engineering Sciences Directorate. The Design Engineering Group provides institutional leadership, processes, and technical resources for safe, high quality, and cost-effective engineering and operational configuration management in support of LANL operations. The Structural Engineer position will be an addition to a team of licensed engineers responsible primarily for structural engineering design and analysis, as well as review of LANL construction projects to ensure that the designs comply with LANL, State, Federal, and U.S. Department of Energy requirements. The successful candidate will be responsible for structural engineering, which includes calculations, sketches and specification preparation. Moreover, responsibilities will include providing technical review of contractor submittals, including calculations, drawings, and specifications. The individual will assist the group in the creation and maintenance of institutional engineering and technical standards and practices. Specific duties shall include providing system/equipment design and operational technical support, performing calculations, generating new designs, and leading small design projects.

Required Skills

Demonstrated experience in the development of structural design / analysis. Knowledge of LANL Engineering Standards. Demonstrated technical expertise in non-reactor nuclear and/or non-nuclear facility structural design and analysis. Ability to perform seismic analyses and floor loading analyses in accordance with DOE-STD-1020, DOE-STD-1021, and LANL Engineering Standards. The primary focus of this position will be on the design, modification, and review of structural systems. Knowledge of typical facility-related structural codes and standards is required. Experience as a structural designer analyst at a major industrial or DOE non-reactor nuclear facility. Ability to manage multiple tasks requiring varying resource needs and deadlines. A team player able to work independently and serve a wide base of customers. Experience in effective oral and written communication with peers, customers, and management. A successful work history in a team environment. This position requires a Q access authorization. Applicants must have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.

Desired Skills

Experience in providing leadership to multidiscipline design teals and mentoring less experienced engineers. Experience in preparation of Functional and Operational Requirements Documents or other Design Requirements Documents. Familiarity with or experience preparing Design Change Package (DCP) for projects involving facility system modifications of programmatic and/or commercial equipment or systems. Familiarity in non-reactor nuclear building operations, maintenance, configuration management programs. and quality assurance programs. Knowledge of LANL Conduct of Engineering procedures. Experience with structural dynamic analysis. Active or re-instatable Q- Clearance.

Education

BS (M.S. Preferred) in Civil or structural Engineering or related technical field. Licensed professional engineer with structural emphasis designation, or the ability to be licensed in the future. A license from another state is acceptable: if NM registration can be obtained either by test or comity.
