Summary
Work as a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer within the Design Engineering Group (DE). The
Engineering Services Division (ES) is part of the Engineering and Engineering Sciences Directorate. The
Design Engineering Group provides institutional leadership, processes, and technical resources for safe,
high quality, and cost-effective engineering, construction, and operational configuration management in
support of LANL operations.
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer position is part of a team of engineers responsible primarily for
review of LANL construction projects to ensure that the designs comply with LANL, State, Federal, and
U.S. Department of Energy requirements. The successful candidate will become the Mechanical
engineering subject matter expert on facilities glovebox and non-reactor nuclear related issues and will
work with the mechanical engineering point of contact in maintaining mechanical related standards and
specifications as part of the Laboratory's Engineering Standards Program. The primary focus of this
position will be on the design, modification, and review of mechanical systems for both non-reactor nuclear
and non-nuclear buildings. These systems include HVAC systems, HEPA filter exhaust systems, cooling
and heating water systems, pumps, non-reactor nuclear laboratory systems, and mediurnllow pressure steam
systems. The individual will assist the group in the creation and maintenance of institutional engineering
and technical standards and practices. Specific duties shall include providing system equipment design and
operational technical support, performing calculations, generating new designs, and leading small design
projects. Additional responsibilities include analysis of plant systems equipment problems and
troubleshooting equipment failures and operational deficiencies, definition of facility system design and
safety envelope requirements, and review proposed facility designs modifications for maintainability,
operability, and conformance to facility operational and safety requirements.
Required Skills
Several years of demonstrated technical expertise in non-reactor nuclear and non-nuclear facility
mechanical systems, components, structures. Working knowledge of related non-reactor nuclear codes,
standards, best practice, non-reactor nuclear hazardous mechanical confinement systems, and generation of
piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID7s). Actual field experience as a mechanical design engineer at a
major industrial or DOE non-reactor nuclear facility. Familiarity in non-reactor nuclear building operations,
maintenance, configuration management programs, and quality assurance programs. Ability to manage
multiple tasks requiring varying resource needs and deadlines is a must. A team player able to work
independently and serve a wide base of customers. Experience in effectively communicating, both verbal
and written, with peers, customers, and management. A successful work history in a team environment..
Desired Skills
Skill in design operation of gloveboxes and the various operational systems serving them. Expertise in
design operation of cryogenic systems. Experience in providing leadership to multidiscipline design teams
and mentoring less experienced engineers. Knowledge of LANL Engineering Standards and DOE orders.
Systems engineering experience in DOE non-reactor nuclear facilities. Active or re-instatable Q-Clearance
Education
BS and/or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering. Active Professional Engineering Licensure and the ability
to obtain New Mexico Professional Registration in the mechanical discipline.
