Summary

This position reports to the Civil/Structural/Architectural (CSA) Team Leader of the Engineering Services Division, Design Engineering (DE) Group. ES division is part of LANL's Engineering and Engineering Sciences Directorate. The Design Engineering Group provides institutional leadership, processes, and technical resources for safe, high quality, and cost-effective engineering and operational configuration management in support of LANL operations. The Architect position will be an addition to a team of licensed engineers responsible primarily for facility and site design / analysis work and review of LANL construction projects to ensure that the designs comply with LANL, State, Federal, and U.S. Department of Energy requirements. The successful candidate will be responsible for architecture, which includes code analysis, sketches, drawings and specification preparation. Moreover, responsibilities will include providing technical review of contractor submittals, including code analysis, ADA compliance, drawings, and specifications. The individual will assist the group in the creation and maintenance of institutional technical standards and practices. Specific duties shall include providing system/equipment design and operational technical support, performing calculations, generating new designs, and leading small design projects.

Required Skills

Technical experience in the DOE complex dealing with architecture, design, or facilities. Experience with strong background in applying standards in design, such as with Auto-Cad systems. Expert AutoCAD and Cad management knowledge. Experience applying good facility or system practices and principles. A team player able to interface effectively with others and resolve concerns for a wide base of groups, organizations, and customers internal and external to the Laboratory. Must function well in a team environment and have demonstrated effective written (technical writing) and oral communications skills. Familiarity with security, environmental, safety and health (ES&H) requirements, and ability to work safely. Demonstrated ability to provide both technical and administrative leadership. Proven ability to solve complex problems. The candidates' professional background must have a solid track record of successful Auto-Cad design work. and must have a high degree of personal motivation. Demonstrated working knowledge of LANL Engineering Standards. Demonstrated experience in non-reactor nuclear and/or non-nuclear facilities. Design work experience, such as with floor plans, at a major industrial or DOE non-reactor nuclear facility. Ability to manage multiple tasks requiring varying resource needs and deadlines. This position requires a Q access authorization. Applicants must have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.

Desired Skills

Experience in preparation of Functional and Operational Requirements Documents and Design Requirements Documents. Familiarity in non-reactor nuclear building operations, maintenance. configuration management programs, and quality assurance programs. Knowledge of LANL Conduct of Engineering procedures. Knowledge of DOE and/or industry facility design requirements and best practices. Working knowledge of LAN1,'s Institutional Policies (IP) and Implementation Procedures (IMPS)/ Laboratory Implementation Guidance (LIGs) and Work Smart Standards. Nuclear or non-nuclear operational facility experience. Registration as an Architect in the State of New Mexico, or ability to obtain registration in the future. Active or re-instatable Q-Clearance.

Education

B.A. (M.A. Preferred) in Architecture or related technical field. Licensed professional engineer with structural emphasis designation is required. A license from another state is acceptable, if NM registration will be obtained either by test or comity.

Pre-Employment Drug Test
