Summary

This position reports to one of the writer-editor team leaders in IRM-CAS. Experienced technical editor needed to develop scientific, instructional, and administrative communication products. Team with writer-editors, graphic artists, and electronic publication specialists to produce technical reports, proposals, brochures, procedures, and software and hardware documentation. Write and edit for the Web. Write and edit scientific documents for both technical and nontechnical audiences. Apply the Lab's three levels of edit. Manage multiple projects and produce high-quality work within the constraints of deadlines and budgets. Work effectively as a project lead and team member and work well under pressure. All work must be done on-site and will be on an as-needed basis.

Required Skills

Demonstrated experience in technical editing. Demonstrated knowledge of English grammar and publication processes. Demonstrated experience in analyzing audience needs and researching and interpreting technical information to meet those needs. Experience in three or more of the following areas: (1) planning and producing technical reports, software and hardware documentation, and procedures; (2) reviewing communication products for effectiveness and quality; (3) proposal writing; (4) writing for technical and nontechnical audiences based on interviews with subject-matter experts and/or independent research; and (5) writing and editing for the Web. Demonstrated project management knowledge and experience in coordinating publication projects, including establishing and maintaining budgets and schedules. Experience leading publications teams and working in a variety of team roles. Experience juggling the demands of multiple work priorities and working effectively under pressure. Strong interpersonal skills: this position requires tactful interactions with managers, scientific staff, and publication team members. Willingness to work occasional overtime.

Desired Skills

Experience editing and producing lengthy compliance documents, experience with communication planning, and experience authoring/editing material for electronic media such as CDs and integrated media presentations. Familiarity with Macintosh computers, Microsoft Office, and InDesign.

Education

Bachelor's or advanced degree in English, journalism, technical communication, or one of the physical/social sciences is desired. Equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.

Notes To Applicants

Applicants must be willing to take a writing/editing test, submit work samples if interviewed and, if hired, complete IRM-CAS writer/editor training and apply for a security clearance. The security clearance normally requires U.S. citizenship.

Pre-Employment Drug Test

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a pre-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
