Position Overview

The successful applicant will work as an engineer within the Engineering Services Division and will be a member of an engineering team deployed to a facility at the Laboratory. This position provides the following engineering services: configuration management support; implementation of the authorization basis; technical baseline maintenance; monitoring, tracking, and trending of major systems; definition of maintenance requirements; troubleshooting; root cause analysis; preparation of detailed corrective maintenance instructions for complex or critical operations; preparation of engineered equivalency analysis; provides field implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) Program.

Key Position Requirements

Demonstrated technical experience in design engineering, system engineering, or operations at a nuclear or industrial facility; demonstrated experience applying engineering practices and principles. Demonstrated experience in engineering including controls, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical baseline maintenance. Demonstrated working knowledge of DOE standards applicable to facility design, operation, and maintenance is preferred. Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both written and verbally; proficiency with personal computers. Demonstrated experience working with industry standards. BS degree in technology field, engineering, or related science.

Summary

Uses the principles and theories of engineering, math and science to solve technical problems within discipline in support of engineering and engineering research. Supports engineering/projects in the performance of complex and demanding assignments requiring initiative and independent judgment. Responsible for assigned activities within an engineering discipline in support of facilities, design, operation, maintenance, project and/or research-based engineering. May provide direction to technicians. Able to work independently and as part of a team. Utilizes engineering and computer technology to accomplish work. Continuously improves work processes to meet customer needs.

Job Duties

  1. Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. Maintains required safety and security training, assures safety and security compliance, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.
  2. Plans and schedules detailed phases of engineering work usually in one discipline. Performs work that involves conventional engineering to resolve conventional engineering issues but may include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials and/or difficult coordination requirements.
  3. Uses professional concepts and Laboratory objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
  4. Frequently contributes to the development of new methods and approaches.
  5. Develops resolution to complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity and where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
  6. Exerts significant latitude in determining objectives of assignment, and determine the methods and procedures needed for new assignments. 
  7. Plans, coordinates, and prepares equipment or work specifications, bid evaluations and award recommendations for equipment.
  8. Applies expert knowledge of the principles and theories of engineering, mathematics and science to solve routine technical problems in area of discipline.
  9. Work with engineering staff to prepare and/or carry out changes in design, methods of manufacture/assembly, and drafting techniques/procedures in area of discipline; coordinate corrective actions.
  10. Performs technical research and gathers and anlayzes data needed by engineers in their area of discipline.
  11. Applies knowledge of analytical and/or scientific software, computer-aided design (CAD) and CAD/CAM software and industrial control software within area of discipline; and word processing software at an advanced working level.
  12. Coordinates engineering efforts in assigned areas between specialty and other engineering groups or disciplines, with the client, suppliers, and contractors and between other divisional groups.
  13. When delegated, assumes a lead role over other staff or project subgroups for completing specific tasks.
  14. Assists in on-the-job training of personnel, as assigned.
  15. Performs or assists in the performance of problem analysis and original design. 
  16. Provides project support. Reviews project controls, cost estimates, quantity takeoffs, and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders.
  17. Adheres to engineering policies, programs, procedures and practices.
  18. Promotes a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Job Knowledge

  • Expert knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling and design.
  • Expert knowledge of complex mathematical formulas and computations.
  • Expert knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Expert knowledge of engineering principles and basic technical responsibilities within designated discipline.
  • Expert knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and guides.
  • Expert knowledge of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.

Education

  • Position typically requires a baccalaureate degree in engineering, engineering technology, or equivalent years of relevant experience in lieu of degree requirement; and at least 8 years of relevant experience preferred.

Direction

A. Supervision Received

  • Receives technical and operational direction from designated supervisor/manager. 

B. Supervision Exercised

  • May provide direction to technicians and administrative staff, as directed.

C. Contacts

  • Regular contact with other engineering technologists, engineers, facility personnel and technicians.
