Help us protect and provide safe access to one of nature's most accessible, active volcanoes and dynamic natural landscapes.

Join employees and volunteers of the Mount St. Helens Institute and the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument for a:

Volunteers are needed to help with recreation operations, visitor information, and resource management.  Projects include helping to maintain trails and recreation facilities, managing the climbing route and backcountry areas, and sharing the wonder of Mount St. Helens with volcano visitors.

Ape Cave Lava Tube

Go Ape for Trails Week at Mount St. Helens

Help Clean-Up Ape Cave and Clear Winter Debris on Trails and at Facilities South of the Volcano

Project involves cleaning up Ape Cave lava tube, Trail of Two Forests, and clearing winter storm debris for the upcoming season.  Volunteers should bring lunch, water and work gloves.  Be prepared for high mountain weather and rain or shine conditions. At 3:30 p.m., the work party will be followed by a volunteer-appreciation potluck and barbecue at the picnic area at Trail of Two Forests. The barbecue will be followed at 4:30 p.m. by an optional guided tour of Ape Cave led by an expert naturalist/interpreter and Mount St. Helens Institute volunteer.

Summer Solstice Lewis River Trail Spectacular

Start the Summer Off Right!  Help Maintain Trails in Old-Growth Forests along the Lewis River

Work will involve clearing storm debris and repairing trail tread and facilities southeast of Mount St. Helens. Efforts will focus on the Lewis River, Curly Creek Falls and Big Creek Falls Trails. Volunteers should bring work gloves, sturdy work boots or hiking boots and come prepared for rain or shine weather.

Pulling Scotch Broom, Weed Rodeo

3rd Annual                                      Mount St. Helens Weed Rodeo

Help Celebrate the Gifford Pinchot National Forest Centennial and Protect Natural Recovery NW of the Volcano. 

Project involves removing scotch broom and other invasive weeds from areas near our trails and visitor centers. Volunteers should bring work gloves and come prepared for high mountain weather and rain or shine conditions.  The first 30 volunteers to arrive on Saturday morning will lasso themselves a Weed Rodeo polo shirt.

Saturday, July 12:

Mid-Summer Volcano Work Party

Help Repair Trails and Facilities Northeast of the Volcano

Work will involve clearing storm debris and repairing trail tread and facilities along the Boundary Trail, starting at the Johnston Ridge Observatory.  Volunteers should bring work gloves and come prepared for rain or shine weather. The work party will be followed by a volunteer-appreciation barbecue and potluck.   Volunteers and MSHI members are invited to camp out with us on Saturday night, and join us for an optional geologist and biologist guided tour on Sunday morning July 13.

Friends of the Forest Weekend

Help Repair Storm Damaged Trails NW of the Volcano and Join us for a Stargazing Spectacular

Work will involve clearing overgrown vegetation, storm debris and repairing trail tread on the South Coldwater and Lakes Trails.  Volunteers should bring work gloves and come prepared for rain or shine weather.  There will be an optional Saturday night potluck dinner and camp out in the parking lot of the Coldwater Ridge Visitor Center . Work party volunteers are also invited to attend our Saturday night Mount St. Helens Stargazing Spectacular Field Seminar with Vancouver Sidewalk Astronomers at no cost.

Volcanic Trails Work Party

Help Repair Trails NE of the Volcano

Work will involve clearing winter storm debris and repairing trail tread and facilities along Forest Road 99 in the 1980 blast zone. Efforts will focus on trails in the vicinity of Bear Meadows and Ghost Lake. Volunteers should bring work gloves and come prepared for rain or shine weather. On Monday afternoon, the work party will be followed by an optional volunteer potluck barbecue.

National Public Lands Day

Help maintain trails and facilities on the South side of Mount St. Helens

Join us as we celebrate National Public Lands Day and help prepate trails and facilities on the south side of Mount St. Helens for the Fall/Winter season. Meet at the Marble Mtn Snopark at 10:00 a.m. and the work party will continue until 4:00 p.m.  Following the work party there will be a potluck and barbecue (bring a side dish or desert to share).  Volunteers should bring work gloves, come prepared for rain or shine weather.

Trail Maintenance, Recreation Site Restoration, and Resource Stewardship Projects

Join staff and volunteers from the Mount St. Helens Institute and monument for a variety of challenging and fun weekend trail repair and resource stewardship projects.  Trail maintenance often involves hiking and working in steep terrain and can be physically demanding.  This season's program will include projects both within the 1980 volcanic blast zone and in nearby forests.

Volcano Volunteers

Help Share the Wonder of

Mount St. Helens with Volcano

Visitors and Students of All Ages

Volunteers are needed to help provide visitor information on area geology, ecology and stewardship of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.

Work will include helping to staff facilities and interpretive programs (Johnston Ridge Observatory, Ape Cave and Windy Ridge) and to provide visitor information and services at a variety of remote sites around the volcano.
