Education and Training

Clinical education programs for physical medicine and rehabilitation are available to residents. Residents from the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Washington D.C. participate in clinical and research rotations through an affiliation between NIH, Rehabilitation Medicine at the NIH Clinical Center and the National Rehabilitation Hospital. The residents may also avail themselves of clinical specialty teaching and research opportunities in this program.

Medical school and college students are mentored as part of the NIH Research and Training programs.  Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine physiatrists participate in the intramural research training (IRTA) program and the Summer Internship Program.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine physiatrists conduct in-service training and education for nurses and clinical fellows at the NIH Clinical Center. A large number of the physiatrists are invited to lecture at the local, national, and international level. Many work with national professional organizations to develop teaching and curriculum materials for rehabilitation and rheumatology training.
