Summary
The Los Alamos component of the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI-Los Alamos, administratively located in B Division's B-6 Genome Science Group) is seeking a microbiology/molecular biology postdoctoral research associate in research of single cell genomics. The sequencing group is organized into a network of integrated production teams that have finished more than 170 bacterial genomes during the last 5 years. With the landscape change in genomic research, JGI-LANL is making significant efforts to focus on sequencing and analysis of metagenomes of different environments. Single cell approach is one of several strategies to study metagenomes in great depth. The postdoctoral research associate will be responsible for developing high through-put, robust methods to separate single bacterial cell with flow cytometer and other means, amplify DNA from single cells, and analyze the sequence data generated from the single cell genomes. The selected candidate will work together with several other team members to resolve technical difficulties in the processes with proactive and efficient suggestions, and to report to the team leader on technical issues. Additional interactions will likely be necessary with other LANL Groups, including the Flow Cytometry Group, as the project matures. The successful candidate is expected to propose and implement imaginative suggestions to improve existing practices, procedures and protocols that will significantly enhance the efficiency of the operations.
Required Skills
Experience in microbiology, molecular biology, or genomics and skills for data analyzing. Candidates should possess excellent verbal and written skills. Effective interpersonal, and communication skills in a team environment.
Desired Skills
Experiences in operation of flow cytometer. Skills for programming with perl language.
Education
Ph.D. degree in one or more of the following areas: Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular biology or related field completed within the last 5 years or soon to be completed
