Summary
postdoctoral positions in kinetic theory and large-scale particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation: successful candidates will work with a team of plasma physicists using state-of-the-art kinetic simulation tools to address some outstanding problems in theoretical and applied plasma physics. Current projects include the nonlinear dynamics of parametric instabilities in long pulse laser-plasma interactions, ion and electron acceleration mechanisms using short-pulse lasers and the basic physics of magnetic reconnection for space, laboratory and astrophysical applications. Our research team will employ the world's first petaflop supercomputer to perform 3D fully kinetic simulations on an unprecedented scale in order to better understand key aspects of these problems.
Required Skills
We seek highly motivated applicants with a strong theoretical and/or computational background in one or more of these topics and a demonstrated record of outstanding achievement.
Education
Ph.D. in plasma physics or closely related area completed within the last five years or soon to be completed.
Notes To Applicants
For additional technical inquiries, contact William Daughton at daughton@lanl.gov. Please submit a cover letter addressing how you meet the required skills along with a CV and contact information for three references.
Pre-Employment Drug Test
The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a pre-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Government Conflict of Interest
To ensure that you and LANL avoid any potential conflicts of interest, all current/former Government Officials must read and respond, if applicable, to the LANL Applicant Disclosure Form.
