Summary

Postdoctoral position in environmental microbiology or bio-inorganic environmental chemistry with the Los Alamos Actinide Chemistry and Repository Science Program (ACRSP) team (EES-12). ACRSP is a multidisciplinary LANL team working in a university setting at an NMSU institute located in Carlsbad New Mexico. We have a state of the art environmental chemistry research laboratory and are part of the Los Alamos Earth and Environmental Sciences division that has a broad range of basic, computational, and applied research in many areas of environmental and energy security research. We are seeking a candidate with a strong background in applied subsurface microbiology, environmental engineering, or related subsurface chemistry/microbiology field to support fundamental research aspects of three program areas: Biodiesel energy research, microbiological effects on actinide speciation in near-surface groundwater, and the effects of halophiles on performance-related issues in the WIPP transuranic nuclear repository. Candidates will be expected to work with the ACRSP team to conduct outstanding research in support of these program areas.

Required Skills

Fundamental knowledge and laboratory experience in subsurface microbiology and bio-related environmental engineering. A broad background in instrumental analysis and microbiological techniques. A demonstrated record of technical excellence and innovative thinking as evidenced by publications, presentations, and letters of reference. The ability to carry out all activities in accordance with stringent health, safety, and environmental policies. Ability to work effectively both in a team environment and independently to meet programmatic milestones. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Excellent organizational skills.

Desired Skills

The ability to obtain a DOE "Q" security clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship. Experience and expertise in molecular biological techniques. Knowledge and experience in radioactive materials handling and glovebox operations. Demonstrated ability to develop, operate, and maintain analytical approaches and techniques.

Education

A Ph.D. in microbiology, biological/civil engineering, environmental chemistry, or a related technical discipline completed within the last five years or soon to be completed is required.
