Summary

Postdoctoral Position in Applied Nuclear Science Research: The Safeguards Science and Technology Group (N-1) of Los Alamos National Laboratory has postdoctoral positions in applied research involving nuclear measurement technologies. These positions are for a two-year term, extendible for a third year. The work performed in the group has a major impact on preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons by providing accurate measurement technologies for nuclear materials at domestic and international sites. Applications include nuclear materials control and accountability for domestic DOE and international nuclear facilities, nuclear material detection for international and Homeland Security applications, nuclear waste disposal, nuclear material stabilization efforts, and international nonproliferation efforts. The group's research areas include: neutron and gamma-ray measurements (detector simulation, design, development, and evaluation), novel radiation detection material development, nuclear measurement techniques, neutron and gamma-ray tomography, portable spectroscopic analysis, , accurate low-level heat measurement techniques, X-ray fluorescence and transmission, and specialized electronics development, remote monitoring, detection of clandestinely transported radioactive materials, and related activities. Individuals with interest and experience in any of these research areas are encouraged to apply.

Required Skills

Candidates we seek will have outstanding academic records and references and will be experienced hands-on nuclear physics/engineering experimentalists, talented in developing original ideas for experiments, simulating and designing experiments and detectors, acquiring and analyzing data, and publishing results.

Education

We require a Ph.D. in Nuclear or High-energy Physics or Nuclear Engineering (completed within the last five years or soon to be completed).

Notes To Applicants

Details on work performed in the group can be found by contacting Greg Sheppard at gsheppard@lanl.gov.

Pre-Employment Drug Test
